Oktoberfest in Abu Dhabi

While in a beverage shop ūüėČ last month I saw an advert for Oktoberfest in Abu Dhabi. Wait. What? Yes, I still live in a very Muslim country.

A much smaller version of the original festival held in Munich, this one was held on one of my favorite islands here, Yas Island Рhome of the famous Ferrari World and Formula 1 racetrack.  I invited a coworker to join me for what I was sure would be a good time. Was it ever!

You pay your entrance fee and get a few vouchers for food and beverages.

But this is an event hosted by the Crowne Plaza hotel catering to Western expats in Abu Dhabi. What do you expect?

There were people in Bavarian costume singing and knocking back pints and litres of beer.

And then there were the rest of us who happily joined them.

And thoroughly enjoyed letting our hair down for an evening.

I’m loving¬†this life! Events like this, to me, highlight¬†the duality¬†of living in the UAE and Abu Dhabi in particular. By day, we expats uphold the conservative veil that is required to do our jobs.¬†By night? Most¬†bets are off.¬†We have many places where we get to be ourselves. Wear a short skirt, show some cleavage, sip a cocktail, dance the night away. And when you’re done, you act like you have some sense and get home responsibly. You know, show¬†some decency and respect ¬†for the laws and customs of the country. Generally,¬†the¬†Emiratis in the capital city¬†leave us be while we’re living the haram life. As long as we don’t blatantly throw¬†our activities in their faces, they do their thing and¬†we go do ours.

If you missed all the fun of Oktoberfest 2014 on the first night, you still have one last night to catch it. Yalla! What are you waiting for? The party begins at 4pm Friday, 17th October at du Forum on Yas Island.
