How Bizarre: Eating Korean Food

Confession: I have never eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because I think the combination looks gross and shouldn’t be paired. I’ve vowed never to eat one because of those reasons.

Admittedly, before coming to Korea I wasn’t much of an adventurous eater. I love watching Andrew Zimmern’s show Bizarre Foods and being totally amazed and grossed out by the things he eats. Many of the things that man put in his mouth I have also vowed that I would never eat. You know what they say, right? Never say never!

I recently saw Zimmern’s 100th episode of Bizarre Foods and it totally gave me a different perspective for eating weird things in a new country. Zimmern mentioned that the foods we might think are bizarre, weird, or just plain gross are delicious morsels to people in other cultures. Even though I’m a legal resident of Korea, I’m very much aware that I am still a guest here. I came here to learn how others live – and part of that understanding involves trying some of the foods they love.

Eating silkworm larvae, sea squirts, and live octopus are likely some of the strangest things I’ve eaten in my life. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches don’t really seem that menacing anymore. I hope you too are inspired to throw away your food wariness and try something crazy (for you).
