CL’s The Baddest Female (나쁜 기집애)

I’m not ashamed to admit that I enjoy Korean music – including (most) K-Pop. So, I will be writing posts from time to time that highlight a song or artist that has caught my attention in Korea. Here’s the first post.

One of my favorite K-Pop groups is 2NE1. Those girls can sAng! I also happen to like their style – individually and as a group. They have been quite silent for a few years it seems, but I heard a rumor that they would be collaborating with for a US album. Maybe I missed it? Anyway, imagine my surprise when one of my 6th graders told me that CL of 2NE1 has a solo album now. Check out her latest single, Baddest Female (나쁜 기집애).

Now, I asked the kids what 나쁜 기집애 means because it seemed like she meant “baddest bitch”. Only one brave soul, the boy who showed me the video, attempted to answer.

Me: Is 기집애 a bad word? Does it mean bitch?

Student: No, teacher. 기집애 doesn’t really mean “bitch” but it’s still not a good word to use.

Yes, I’m that teacher who allows the students in my English Club to say (some) curse words on the condition that they are using it in a manner to explain or understand the meaning of the word by using English. I wish he had a better grasp of the language because I could tell he was struggling to really convey the meaning of the entire phrase to me. For those of you who are wondering, this post might give you some more insight. I’m still sticking with my original, gut feeling that she meant “baddest bitch”. You can decide for yourself.

Bonus: Here’s some footage of CL and her dancers killing it in a rehearsal for this song.

  1. Can you read Korean? I am fascinated you put the characters in the post. I clicked to the other one explaining it and the author was like it could be X but if said like all looks the same!

    How do you read it?
