Being Black in South Korea

A few weekends ago I was in Seoul having conversation and tea with some sista friends at a cafe. We were enjoying each others company when a short, balding, white man began chatting up one of the ladies in the group. I’m nothing but a team player, so I encouraged her to continue her conversation out of earshot since she seemed interested in whatever was coming out of his mouth. Off they went to a cozy corner and the rest of our group sat cracking jokes about events earlier in the day and discussing teaching strategies. When my friend stepped out to answer a phone call, the gentleman made his way back over to our group. Well, about 3 minutes into the conversation he said,

“I just have to know. What’s it like being Black in Korea?”
